Pentaxia was founded in 2008 by three people – Stephen Ollier, Adam Norris & Jon Norris with a focus to supply the UK composite industry and motorsport teams with 5-axis machined patterns. The business was based in a small industrial unit, centrally located in the UK (in Derby). To this day, Stephen (Managing Director) and Adam (Production Director) continue to play an active role within the business, Jon Norris retired in 2015, whilst Russ Meddes also joined as Business Development Director in 2017.
The business quickly outgrew the original industrial unit and in 2008 Pentaxia relocated to newly built premises nearby, where we are still based. As the business has grown, so has the footprint – acquiring additional adjoining industrial units within the industrial estate vicinity. In 2017 Pentaxia moved to a much larger 6 acre site with a 70,000sq ft building specially designed for high volume efficient composite manufacture in Alfreton Road. There is the space on site to expand with an additional 60,000sq ft building.
5-axis machining runs in Pentaxia’s DNA and still acts as a major business capability, supporting our advanced composites division – we have a significant capability with four 5-axis machines on-site to ensure we’ve extensive capacity at all times. In addition to the 5-axis capability, we also have 3-axis machining resources with two HAAS VM3 machines.
In 2011, the business moved into advanced composites manufacturing, driven by a fast developing customer demand towards a “turnkey” composite supply approach, minimising traditional patternmaking interfaces (to in turn produce patterns, mould tools and composite components in one place). It was at this stage we purchased our first autoclave and took the leap into advanced composite production.
As the Pentaxia business has grown, so have the capabilities – we follow a continuous investment strategy approach to ensure we’re continually investing in new plant and equipment to keep us at the forefront of the market. The business is privately owned, and we’re proud to be family run, this enables a dynamic approach to our investment strategy, expansion and growth, reducing multi-tiered expenditure approvals. If we need it, can demonstrate a business case, we typically invest (often ahead of forthcoming requirements).
Business growth has led us into many new, diverse engineering sectors since company founding and as we’ve grown we’ve carved a strong reputation specifically in aerospace (AS9100 accredited), luxury automotive, defence and high technology/bespoke advanced composite tooling and composite manufacturing.
We offer a world-class turnkey tooling design and composite manufacturing capability to some of the most demanding advanced engineering clients in the world. From fast jets to luxury cars, front of grid motorsport teams to specialist bespoke engineering organisations, we are dynamic, reliable and adopt an “end to end” approach to project delivery.
We never over promise and we deliver capability and predictability, which is vital to our customer base. Since company founding we’ve demonstrated time and again to our customers we’re a dependable, reliable and pro-active business, underpinned extensively by a highly experienced management team.
It is these key aspects which have driven the business to what it has become today – one of the fastest growing advanced engineering companies in Europe.
Most of all we are proud of our people, we have an incredibly strong team with extensive expertise in engineering, composites, tooling design, quality, inspection and surface finishing. A vast proportion of our management and composite team have well over 10+ years’ experience in composites, with many having degree level qualifications right up to MSc qualification.
What makes our strategy different?
Our Managing Director has over forty years experience as a Professional Engineer and previously spent over twenty years as a Director of multinational companies, building high growth engineering focussed businesses and joint-ventures in a range of market sectors. This corporate thinking has helped lay the foundation for Pentaxia to succeed and aggressively grow within the UK, European and wider global composite market by implementing scalable systems not typically utilised by SME’s. Combined with front end investment – often investing in plant and equipment ahead of requirements, we are carving a strong reputation in the market as we grow year on year.
Joining the business in 2017, our Business Development Director has brought a fresh perspective to the organisation, having previously worked within a highly corporate focussed UK specialist engineering plc. With extensive experience and knowledge of international sales and business development this has directly impacted Pentaxia’s expansion into new sales territories both in the UK and internationally.
If you’ve a project where you’re considering utilising advanced composites, we’re lucky to have a team who can deliver based on experience and practical knowledge, honed by years in the industry.
We are continually working on new ideas and technology, because we know what we do today will not be good enough to be competitive tomorrow!
